Andrew McCabe worked in a private legal firm for three years after finishing his studies before joining the FBI in 1996. He began his FBI career as a member of the SWAT squad in the New York Field Office, then moved on to the Eurasian Organized Crime Task Force as a supervisory special agent in 2003.

Over the next few years, he rose through the ranks of the FBI, including the National Security Branch and the FBI Counterterrorism Division.

In 2009, McCabe became the first director of the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group, which was established after the Department of Defense issued Directive 2310, which prohibited the use of numerous interrogation tactics.

He was a part of the Boston Marathon bombing investigation in 2013, and he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Director in 2016. Due to a potential conflict of interest, he was involved in the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. He had no conflicts of interest during the investigation, it was later revealed.

After President Donald Trump fired the previous director, James Comey, he would take over as acting director of the FBI. He was on the verge of becoming a director of the firm, but he had a falling out with Trump, who regularly attacked McCabe on Twitter.

The FBI’s involvement in the investigation into alleged collaboration between Trump and the Russians caused a lot of the problems. He later met with new FBI Director Christopher Wray to discuss the possibility of a demotion, which prompted him to resign and announce his retirement.

He planned to retire on his 50th birthday, making him eligible for a pension, and then went on paid leave.
