American textile artist and printmaker who has been labeled the best known textile artist of the 20th century. Anni Albers was born on June 12, 1899 in Germany. She was invited by Philip Johnson to teach at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1933. She started painting at a young age and studied under an impressionist from 1916 until 1919 before later attending Bauhaus at Weimar in April 1922.
