He worked in speech and drama as an education college lecturer, teaching German, French and Spanish alongside Ann McGlinn.
In the ‘British Path and Purpose’ programme, Burgess played a central role in promoting forces in Britain’s peacetime socialism in the aftermath of the war.
In 1946, Burgess left the army as Sergeant Major and was a speech and drama lecturer at the Mid-West School of Education and the Emergency Teacher Training Center in Bamber Bridge near Preston for the following four years.
