Ara Parseghian Career

Ara Raoul Parseghian was born in Akron, Ohio, on May 21, 1923, to Armenian and French parents.

In 1944, he was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Academy and played on their football team, which was coached by Paul Brown.

When he returned from the Navy, he enrolled at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he lettered in three sports: football, basketball, and baseball.

At the time, Miami’s head coach was the legendary Sid Gillman. Ara began working for Gillman in 1946 and 1947.

Ara was named a Little All-America (awarded to smaller schools) in 1947 and, already married, entered the professional football league to support his family.

Ara was a member of the All-American Football League (AAFL) Cleveland Browns, and his former coach was Paul Brown.

He was with the Browns for two years, 1948-1949, before suffering a career-ending hip injury. Ara gained 199 yards, scored two touchdowns, and intercepted one pass while with the Browns.

Ara has a 170-58-6 (73.9 percent) career coaching record, including two National Championships with Notre Dame.

In 1980, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Ara went on to work as a play-by-play announcer for ABC (1975-1981) and NBC (1982-1985).

He also has a statue at Miami University’s Cradle of Coaches Plaza, which is located outside of the football complex.

He was named AFCA Coach of the Year and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year in 1964.
