he joined the Filipino group Ijos and began singing professionally.
In 1986, some Ijos members established a different pop-rock band called Amo,
which won the Rock Wars competition in the Philippines.
In 1988, the band won the Philippine leg of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest.
Despite being disqualified in the finals owing to technical difficulties,
