Russell-Professional Career
Austin submitted for a patent when he was just 15 years old, for a groundwater recycling system he had invented.

Jason would subsequently become the chief technology officer of Luminar Technologies Inc., which he co-founded.
Luminar Technologies Inc. was created in 2012, while Austin was still in high school, just after he turned 17.
The company spent the first five years in stealth mode (a temporary level of secrecy maintained by a company to prevent alerting competitors to an impending product launch or another commercial effort).
Rather than acquiring lidar components, he used to engineer and produce them himself during this time period.
In an interview, he revealed that he learned these and other new talents by reading Wikipedia articles and watching YouTube videos.
In 2018, he was named to Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30” list.
Austin’s 104.7 million shares (roughly a third of Luminar Technologies Inc.’s stock) were valued at USD 2.4 billion at the close of trading on December 3, 2020.
