Bertha received her first marriage proposal in Vienna from Prince Philipp Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
Once her mother lost money and was thrown into poverty, the novelist was compelled to go to Vienna.
Suttner, however, declined Prince’s invitation since she was too young at the time.
Owing to financial difficulties, the Nobel Peace Prize winner became engaged to her ex-fiancé “Gustav Heine von Geldern” shortly after.
He was a journalist, 31 years her senior. Bertha called off the engagement after he tried to kiss her too hard.
Furthermore, her next engagement was with “Prince Adolf Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein” in the summer of 1872.
Tragically, he died at sea in October of the same year while on his way to America to escape his debts.
Eventually, she fell for her ex-boyfriend, Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner.
He was the oldest son of Karl von Suttner, a former teacher of Bertha’s.
The novelist was seven years Arthur’s junior. In 1850, the couple secretly married at the church of Saint.
