Former U.S. Air Force Colonel remembered for being the last surviving pilot of the Doolittle Raid, the first American aerial attack on Japan during World War II. In June 1942, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions during the raid. Bill Bower was born on February 13, 1917 in Ohio. He participated in the famous Doolittle Raid, named after the mission’s commander, James Doolittle. He attended Kent State University before graduating from the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying School in 1940.
