After the popularity and controversy of Less Than Zero in 1985, Ellis became close friends with Jay McInerney, and the two were known as the “toxic twins” for their highly publicized late-night revelry.

Following the publishing of American Psycho, Ellis became a pariah for a time (1991).

During Glamorama’s long literary history, he was offered The Informers (1994).

Ellis prepared a script for the film adaptation of The Rules of Attraction that was never used.

In the opening chapter of Lunar Park, he records a dramatized version of his entire story up until this point (2005).

Young screenwriter Nicholas Jarecki approached Ellis about adapting The Informers into a film.

In 2009, the film was released.

Despite shortcomings as a screenwriter, Ellis collaborated with famed director Gus Van Sant to adapt the Vanity Fair story “The Golden Suicides” into a film of the same name in 2009.

As of 2014, the film had never been made.

The sequel to Ellis’ debut novel, Imperial Bedrooms, was published in 2010.

Positive critics believed it was a conclusion of the ideas begun in Less Than Zero, American Psycho, and Lunar Park, respectively.

The novel’s rehashed topics and listless style were criticized in negative reviews.

Ellis indicated an interest in writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Kelly Marcel, Patrick Marber, and Mark Bomback were eventually hired.

Ellis developed the screenplay for The Canyons and helped secure funds for its production in 2012.

Although critically lambasted, the picture had a little financial success when it was released in 2013.

Some regard this work, whose protagonist, Patrick Bateman, is a cartoonishly materialistic yuppie as well as a serial killer, as an example of transgressive art.

The film American Psycho has attained cult status.
