Brett Somers: Birth, Parents & Education

Audrey Dawn Johnston, the multihyphenate, was born on July 11, 1924, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Her family relocated to Portland, Maine, shortly after her birth, where she was raised.

Brett decided to move to New York City when she was 18 to pursue a career as an actress. She eventually settled in New York City’s Greenwich Village, where she met her first husband.

According to records, she chose her first name “Brett” from Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises,” published in 1926, and her chosen last name “Somers” is said to be her mother’s maiden name.

Brett Somers: Professional Career

She began her career as a stage performer after joining the Actors Studio in 1952.

Her early work was primarily on television shows such as Robert Montgomery Presents, Kraft Television Theatre, Playhouse 90, and The Philco Television Playhouse.

Brett Somers landed her first Broadway role in the play Maybe Tuesday, which closed after five performances due to a flop. She also appeared in The Country Girl, The Seven Year Itch, and Happy Ending.

The actress, whose acting resume is primarily comprised of television appearances, has also appeared in episodic primetime series such as The Fugitive, American Style, Have Gun Will Travel, Love, Barney Miller, ChiPs, Ben Casey, and many others. Her film credits include Bus Riley’s Back in Town and A Rage to Live.

As previously stated, Somers’ most notable television project is the ABC situation comedy The Odd Couple, in which she co-starred with her real-life husband. In the early 1970s series, she played Blanche, the fictional former wife of Oscar Madison (played by Jack Klugman).

Brett owes her appearance on Match Game to her husband, who suggested to the game’s producers that she join after he appeared on the show during its first week in 1973. Later, the actress joined other celebrity panelists such as Charles Nelson Reilly, Scoey Mitchell, and many more.

During her nine-year run on the game show, she was known for wearing various wigs, huge eyeglasses, and writing her answers with her left hand.
