Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, and died on November 22, 1963.
He was born into a protestant Ulster family in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
He sought out the companionship of the Irish and was fascinated by Celtic literature and folklore.
He was a fan of W.B.Yeats’ work at a time when he was largely unknown in England.
After attending a number of private and public institutions, including Malvern in Worcestershire, C.S. Lewis was given a scholarship at University College, Oxford University in 1916.
He was an outstanding student, earning a triple first (the top degree in three different degrees).
Nevertheless, his university career was cut short in 1917 when he volunteered to join the British army in the First World War.
He was sent to the Somme Valley, where he participated in trench warfare.
He was hurt by a shell in the latter months of the war and was taken home to recover.
During his recuperation, he got more friendly with Mrs. Moore, the mother of a close army comrade, Edward ‘Paddy’ Moore.
Until her death in the 1940s, he was very close to Mrs. Moore, often referring to her as his mother.
C.S.Lewis returned to Oxford and finished his degrees before teaching English at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925 until 1954.
He was a prolific writer who became good friends with J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and Owen Barfield, among others.
They established an unofficial group called the inklings.
They would meet in Oxford bars like ‘The Eagle and Child,’ where they would read excerpts from their writings.
He would support Tolkien while he worked on his epic Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Death
Lewis resigned from his Cambridge position in 1963 due to cardiac problems.
On November 22, 1963, he died in Headington, Oxford.

C.S. Lewis joined the Cambridge University faculty as a literature professor in 1954, and in 1956 he married Joy Gresham, an American English teacher with whom he had corresponded.
Lewis was filled with joy during their marriage, even though Gresham died of cancer in 1960.

Later, C.S. Lewis said that he was reluctant and unwilling to convert.
Nonetheless, they felt obligated to embrace evidence of faith.
He describes his conversion to Christianity as “kicking, struggling, resentful, and flashing his eyes in every direction for a chance to flee.”
In works such as The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis rose to prominence as an apologist for Christianity.
He emphasized a more global type of Christianity in order to avoid the sectarianism that was prevalent in his own Northern Ireland.
He rarely mentioned a specific Christian denomination, preferring to emphasize the fundamental Christian virtues shared by all Christian faiths.
He remained an Anglican, much to Tolkien’s disgust, and never converted to Roman Catholicism.
His Religious beliefs affected some of his more popular writings, including The Chronicles of Narnia.
Though he incorporates motifs from Roman and Celtic stories, underlying Christian concepts of sacrifice and Christ-like behaviors are there.
Lewis died of renal failure a few years later, in 1963.
His death occurred on the same day as J.F. Kennedy’s assassination.
