Remembered as one of the first African American students to walk onto the campus of Little Rock Central High School, this youngest member of the famous 1957 “Little Rock Nine” became, in 1960, the first African American female graduate of the high school. Carlotta LaNier was born on December 18, 1942 in Arkansas. President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the Arkansas National Guard to provide protection for LaNier and the other African American students at Little Rock Central High. Before making civil rights history, she attended a segregated Arkansas school called Dunbar Junior High School. After graduating from the desegregated Central High School, she attended Michigan State University and ultimately earned a degree from Colorado State College.
