Catriona Gray was born in Cairns, Queensland, on January 6, 1994. Her parents are Ian Gray, a Scottish father from Fraserburgh, and Normita Ragas Magnayon, a Filipina mother from Oas, Albay.

Catriona is named after her paternal grandmother, Catherine Gray, who emigrated to Western Australia from Scotland in 1952, and her maternal grandmother, Elsa Magnayon, from Oas, Albay, Philippines.

Catriona was a house captain and a school chorister at Trinity Anglican School in Cairns, where she received her education.

She subsequently went on to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, to pursue a master’s degree in music theory.
