He teamed up with the renowned golf course architect Alister MacKenzie to renovate Pebble Beach and create The Union League Golf and Country Club in California. He started playing golf at age 12 then continued playing at Harvard, where he won the individual title as a sophomore and won the U.S. Amateur in 1904 and 1905.
