Charles Taze Russell was a minister in the Restoration movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Charles Taze Russell formed the International Bible Students Association.
He is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and created the movement that is now known as the Bible Student Movement.
Following his death, the Bible Student Movement was succeeded by a multiplicity of independent Bible student groups.
A few years later, he co-founded Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society with Pittsburgh-based industrialist and philanthropist Mr. William Henry Conley.
Charles Russell was elected president of this organization, which later became an official company.
In the late nineteenth century, Russell preached a huge number of sermons while also writing various essays, booklets, tracts, and pamphlets.
He had printed about 50,000 pages in total.
His six-volume Bible study series “Studies in the Scriptures,” initially named “Millennial Dawn,” was also released.

He was the second of five children born to Joseph Lytel Russell and Ann Eliza Birney.
When his mother died, he was just nine years old.
His family first lived in Philadelphia before moving to Pittsburgh.
They became members of the Presbyterian Church there.
Charles’ father, who owned and operated a haberdashery shop, made him a partner when he was a young adolescent.
When Charles was thirteen, he left the Presbyterian Church and joined the Congregational Church.
He was a devout Christian who scribbled Bible verses on city streets and fence posts.
When he was in his late teens, he began to have reservations about Christianity in general, and he even did some research on many other religions because he still had many unresolved difficulties.
When he was 18 years old, he attended a sermon by Adventist minister Jonas Wendell.
Despite the fact that he still had many reservations after hearing the speech, he was convinced that the Bible was God’s message.

Charles Taze Russell married Maria Frances Ackley on March 13, 1879.
They divorced in 1908 after splitting up in 1897.
Russell was charged with immoral activity with Rose Ball, a much younger woman, in 1894.
Another issue arose when he sold a wheat variety known as “Miracle Wheat” for $60 a bushel at the time—an astronomical price for wheat.
His use of Masonic iconography created even more controversy.
Russell’s health began to deteriorate in his latter years.
He got cystitis during his last trip to the country.
On October 31, 1916, at the age of 64, he died near Pampa, Texas.
He was laid to repose in Pittsburgh’s Rosemont United Cemetery.
Following him as president of the Watch Tower Society was Joseph Franklin Rutherford.
In the years that followed, many Bible study groups endured conflict and division.
A schism was unavoidable; those who supported and remained loyal to Rutherford changed their name to “Jehovah’s Witnesses” in 1931, while countless other groups left the Society to form their own unique organizations.

Russell had departed from both the Presbyterian and Congregational churches at the age of twenty because he could not believe the prospect of a genuine, eternal torment despite God’s power.
With the support of his father and a few others, he founded a group that undertook a thorough and extensive analytical study of the Bible.
The origins of Christian thought, religion, and tradition were investigated.
They came to the conclusion that the Bible did not genuinely support several doctrines of established religions, such as the Trinity, hellfire, and soul immortality.
Some of Russell’s personal ideas revolved around the impending rapture and the second coming of Christ.
Russell founded Zion’s Watch Tower Tract Society in 1881 with Mr. William Henry Conley.
Conley was the president at the time, while Russell was the secretary and treasurer.
Russell’s first book, a 162-page pamphlet titled “Food for Thinking Christians,” was published the same year.
When the society was legally constituted in 1884, Russell was elected president, and the name was eventually changed to the “Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society.”
Thousands of local members and adherents from Ohio, Virginia, New England, and other areas belonged to the group.
Russell was elected as the group’s head on multiple occasions by its members and adherents, who addressed him as “Pastor Russell.”
