Charles V Career

Charles V[a][b] was Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1556, King of Spain (Castile and Aragon) from 1516 to 1556, and Lord of the Netherlands as titular Duke of Burgundy from 1506 to 1555. During his reign as head of the rising House of Habsburg in the first half of the 16th century, his dominions in Europe included the Holy Roman Empire, which stretched from Germany to northern Italy and had direct rule over the Austrian hereditary lands and the Burgundian Low Countries, and a unified Spain, which included the southern Italian kingdoms of Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. Furthermore, his reign included both the long-lasting Spanish and the brief-lived Germ monarchies.

He was the ruler of the Spanish Empire until his voluntary retirement in 1556 when his son Phillip II took over.

Charles V Relationship

Charles V had several mistresses during his reign, including his step-grandmother, Germaine de Foix. These liaisons took place during his bachelorhood and only once during his widowerhood; there is no evidence of him having extramarital affairs during his marriage.

On December 21, 1507, Charles married Mary, the 11-year-old daughter of King Henry VII of England and younger sister to the future King Henry VIII of England, who would take the throne in two years. However, on the advice of Cardinal Wolsey, the engagement was called off in 1513, and Mary was instead married to King Louis XII of France in 1514.

Negotiations for Charles’ marriage began shortly after his accession to the Spanish thrones, with Castilian nobles expressing their desire for him to marry his first cousin Isabella of Portugal, the daughter of King Manuel I of Portugal and Charles’ aunt Maria of Aragon. The nobles wanted Charles to marry a Castilian princess, and a marriage to Isabella would have secured an alliance between Castile and Portugal. The 18-year-old King, on the other hand, was not in a hurry to marry and ignored the nobles’ advice, instead of exploring other marriage options.   Rather than marry Isabella, he sent his sister Eleanor to marry Isabella’s widowed father, King Manuel.
