Charlie McAvoy- Professional Career
He made his playing debut with the New York Rangers in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament, and in 2013, he committed to play for Boston University. Despite having no NHL experience, Charlie had the second-most ice time on the team.
He played for the USA Hockey National Team Development in the US Hockey League for two seasons before being drafted in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by coach David Quinn in the 2015-16 season. Charles was then chosen to play for the United States, where he won a gold medal at the 2017 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship.
He signed a contract with the Boston Bruins on April 10, 2017, and won his first game against the Ottawa Senators on April 12, 2017. He then took a break from the NHL after being diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia, and the following season, he was taken out and officially placed on the injury reserve on October 30.
He returned on February 3, 2018, but was forced to leave the game due to a hit, despite his team’s victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. On February 27, 2018, he scored an overtime goal against the Carolina Hurricanes and was named the youngest defenseman to achieve this level, making him eligible to play at the international level.
Charlie was suspended from one playoff game on May 7, 2019, for an illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets right winger Josh Anderson during the second round of the 2019 NHL Playoffs, and he missed the final game against the Carolina Hurricanes as a result.
On September 15, 2019, he signed a $14.7 million contract with the Boston Bruins and is still a member of the team. Charlie has won all of his junior level gold medals in international competition. He won the World Hockey Challenge in 2014, the World Hockey Challenge in 2015, and the Ice Hockey Championship in 2017. Charlie scored 9 points in 6 games while the Boston Bruins were still in the second round of the Stanley Cup and won a bronze medal in the tournament.
