Native American leader who took part in an 1877 war, after his Nez Perce tribesmen were removed from Oregon’s Wallowa Valley. Chief Joseph was born on March 3, 1840, in Wallowa River, OR. His bravery in the Nez Perce War was praised by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. His father split with other Nez Perce leaders in his refusal to sign an 1863 treaty that would relocate his people to an Idaho reservation, and deprive them of their ancestral lands.
