Her numerous literary works include Despierta, mi bien, despierta; Tunnel to Canto Grande; Sobrevivo; and Flowers from the Volcano. Claribel Alegría was born on May 12, 1924, in Esteli, Nicaragua. She and Adam Zagajewski were both recipients of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature during the first decade of the twenty-first century. She studied at George Washington University after moving to the United States in the early 1940s.
