He was named all-state, Class LL MVP, Connecticut Player of the Year by the New Haven Register, and winner of the McHugh Award. Dan was also named All-American.

He went on to attend the University of Connecticut. He played for the school team and set records for pass completions (916), pass attempts (1567), yards passing (10,706), touchdown passes (84), interceptions (51), total plays (1710), and total yards (10,421).

On March 15, 2012, Dan signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After being cut for four days, he re-signed with the team. He also had a second stint with the Detroit Lions.

He was named Matthew Stafford’s backup quarterback. In addition, before retiring, he spent one game with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017. On October 11, 2017, he announced his retirement from football.
