David Wheaton was born on June 2, 1969 in Minnesota. He won the Canada Masters doubles title with Paul Annacone in 1990. He won the Minnesota State High School Tennis Championship as a freshman in 1984. In his sole year at Stanford University, he won the NCCA title as well as the Block S Award as the school’s best freshman athlete.
