They were friends for a year before growing closer and dating. They agreed to wait until they both graduated before marrying, and in 1977 they married.

Amanda, the couple’s oldest child, played lacrosse at Wesleyan University and later became a lacrosse coach at Rosemary Hall preparatory school.
