After returning to the United States at the age of 18, she was engaged in an automobile accident and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, leaving her partially paralyzed and blind for 10 months after being told she would never see again.

Having time on her hands to reflect on her life, she decided that if she recovered, she would relocate to Hollywood and pursue a career as an actor.

Winger made her cinematic debut as “Debbie” in the 1976 sexploitation picture Slumber Party ’57.

Her next appearance was in three episodes of ABC’s Wonder Woman as Diana Prince’s younger sister Drusilla (Wonder Girl).

The producers wanted her to appear more frequently, but she refused, afraid it would harm her burgeoning career.

In 1978, she appeared as a guest star in Season 4 of the TV show Police Woman.

Her first starring part was in Thank God It’s Friday, followed by her performance opposite John Travolta in Urban Cowboy in 1980, for which she won a BAFTA nomination and two Golden Globe nods (for Best Performance by an Actress and Best New Star).

In 1982, she co-starred in Cannery Row with Nick Nolte and in An Officer and a Gentleman with Richard Gere, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress twice again, once for Terms of Endearment in 1983 (which went to her co-star, Shirley MacLaine, who played her mother in the film), and once for Shadowlands in 1993, for which she also received her second BAFTA nomination.

Her portrayal in A Dangerous Woman got her a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes.
