Long-distance track, road, and marathon athlete who became the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Derartu Tulu was born on March 21, 1972, in Ethiopia. She and fellow Ethiopian Olympian Kenenisa Bekele both grew up in the village of Bekoji.
