Advocaat was at Roda JC until 1973, when he moved to VVV-Venlo. Advocaat scored two goals in 121 appearances for Roda JC. He was loaned out to San Francisco Gales in 1967 before signing a four-year contract with Roda JC. Before his loan was ended, he scored one goal in seven games.

After his loan year, Advocaat relocated to the United States and signed a contract with the North American Soccer League’s Chicago Sting (NASL). Advocaat was a physical education teacher before taking up coaching in 1981, when his brother, Jaap, offered him the opportunity. In 1987, after four years with the squad, he moved to HFC Haarlem as manager, where he stayed for nearly two years.

In 1989, Advocaat took over as manager of Schiedamse Voetbal Vereniging, which won the Eerste Divisie champions (1989-90) season and the Eredivisie in 1990. (1990-1991).
