Dorothy Lyman is an American actress, television personality, director, and writer best known for her roles as Opal Gardner in the soap opera “All My Children” (1981-1983) and Naomi Harper in the TV comedy series “Mama’s Family,” among many other roles she’s played during her career.

Dorothy Lyman, who is now in her 70s, has recently appeared in the TV series “The Blacklist” (2019), as well as the drama film “Back Fork” (2019) starring A.J. Cook, Josh Stewart, and Agnes Bruckner, as well as the action crime drama film “Vault” (2019) starring Theo Rossi, Clive Standen, and Samira Wiley.

Dorothy Lyman was born on April 18, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, to stockbroker Hector H. Lyman and his wife Violet E. Lyman.

She grew up in Minneapolis, where she went to school and graduated from the same high school as her colleague Jill Larson, who took over the part of Opal in “All My Children” after her.

Dorothy has been married twice and divorced; her first marriage lasted from 1971 to 1983 and was to John Tillinger, an actor best remembered for his portrayal as King George III in the TV mini-series “The Adams Chronicles.”

Before their divorce, the couple had two children. She married Vincent Malle for the second time four years later. From 1987 through 2001, they were married and had one kid together.

Dorothy Lyman began her acting career in the early 1970s, playing Jean in the film “The 300 Year Weekend” and then Elly Jo Jameson in the television series “The Edge of Night.”

She continued to act in soap operas, most notably as Gwen Frame in “Another World” from 1976 to 1980. She had her first notable role as Opal Gardner in the soap opera “All My Children” in 1981, and she appeared in 23 episodes of the popular TV series from 1981 to 1983, winning two Daytime Emmy Awards. Dorothy was replaced by Jill Larson after 1983.

Dorothy played Naomi Harper in the TV comedy series “Mama’s Family” from 1983 to 1990, which was a huge hit and catapulted Dorothy to prominence. She appeared in 125 episodes, making her a national sensation and comedy queen.

She didn’t pursue other projects very actively, and even abandoned “All My Children” to focus only on “Mama’s Family,” but she did appear in the television film “Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss” (1988).

Dorothy’s career in soap operas continued with appearances in “Generations” (1990-1991), “The Bold and the Beautiful” (1991-1992), and “Life Goes On.” In 1993, she starred alongside Ashley Judd, Todd Field, and Bentley Mitchum in the romantic drama film “Ruby in Paradise.”

Dorothy had limited screen success in the 1990s, appearing in a few tiny roles, including a cameo appearance in the film “I Love Trouble,” starring Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts.
