Edmilson- Professional Career

In 1995, he joined So Paulo FC and went on to win two Paulista Campeonato titles. He joined Olympique Lyonnais in France in 2000, alongside fellow countryman Caçapa, who was also a goalie at the time, and the two were instrumental in the club winning the League Cup in his first season.

Juninho Pernambucano moved to Rhône-Alpes the next off-season and frequently joined Edmlson in center midfield as they won three straight Ligue 1 titles.

He made his La Liga debut on September 19th, in a 1–1 away draw against Atlético Madrid, and only played six games in his first season as the Catalans won the national championship; on October 3rd, after coming on as a substitute for Samuel Eto’o during a home match against CD Numancia, he was forced to leave after only five minutes on the pitch, and was sidelined for the rest of the season.

Edmlson fully healed for the 2005–06 season, helping Frank Rijkaard’s club win the league and the UEFA Champions League. He played in nine games in the later competition, six of which he finished, including the first half of the final against Arsenal.

After a dismal 2007–08 season, both individually and collectively, he left Barcelona after his contract was not renewed. Edmilson signed a one-year contract with Villarreal CF on May 23, 2008.

He returned to his homeland after only a few months, signing a two-year contract with Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and scoring his first goal in the Copa Libertadores against Club Real Potos just eight days after arriving.

After failing to make the So Paulo championship in 2010, Edmlson left Palmeiras and returned to Spain on January 31, signing a five-month contract with struggling Real Zaragoza — he already had an Italian passport at the time and thus did not count as a foreign player.

Furthermore, as the Aragonese escaped relegation, he continued to play regularly for the remainder of the season, and his contract was extended for another year. On September 12, 2010, he scored his first goal for Zaragoza in a 3–5 home loss to Málaga CF.

Despite just playing 12 games in the club’s penultimate escape from relegation, he returned to his home country in June 2011 and joined Ceará Sporting Club.

On July 18, 2000, he made his national team debut against Paraguay. He was picked to play in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he played in six of the Seleço’s seven games and scored his first (and only) international goal in a 5–2 group stage triumph over Costa Rica. Edmlson was named to the 2006 World Cup team in Germany, however, he was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury acquired in training prior to the competition.
