An inventor who is best known for his invention of the Crayola crayon. Edwin Binney was born on November 25, 1866, in Westchester County, NY. An inventor in the turn of the 20th century, he can be seen in relation to other inventors of the time including Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Nikola Tesla. In 1885, he took control of his father’s business, Peeksill Chemical Co. While experimenting with a mixture of slate waste, cement, and talc, he created the first dustless white chalk.
