Remembered for his pioneering work in the documentary photography genre, this French artist captured Parisian city scenes in the years immediately preceding the French capital’s architectural modernization. Eugene Atget was born on February 12, 1857 in France. Atget’s work greatly influenced the surrealist art of American-born painter and photographer Man Ray. During the late 1870s and the 1880s, he pursued a career as an actor. He began his photography career toward the end of the ’80s and started his famous Old Paris Collection a decade later.
