Grady began her modeling career for Montgomery Ward by appearing in various advertisements.

She made her film debut in the 1988 romantic comedy.

And she later appeared as a recurrent character on the ABC drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.

Her breakthrough role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC police program NYPD Blue. 

Grady played the big-haired squad secretary from 1993 through 1996, earning an Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series each year.

In 1995, she and the rest of the ensemble won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. 

Gail quit the show in 1996 and created a pilot for her sitcom, The Gail O’Grady Project, which was rejected by all networks.

Gail played Helen Pryor in the NBC television series American Dreams, which portrayed an all-American family living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the 1960s, from 2002 to 2005. 

After three seasons, the show was canceled.

Grady was the starring actress in the ABC comedy series Hot Properties in the fall of 2005.
