Sanders told fellow British actor David Niven in 1937 that he planned to commit suicide in his old age.
His prophecy came true when he committed suicide in 1972, after suffering from dementia and depression in his final years.
In 1967, he lost his mother, Margaret Sanders, his then-wife, Benita Hume, and his brother, Tom Conway, all within a year.
To avoid confusion with George, his brother Tom changed his surname from Sanders to Conway.
Interestingly, he chose his surname by dialing a random number that linked him to Conway’s fish market.
The Kinks’ song Celluloid Heroes from 1972 makes a casual allusion to him. “If you covered him in the garbage, George Sanders would still have style,” the lyrics say.
