Maher was born on December 25, 1864 in West Virginia. He worked for a time with architect Frank Lloyd Wright at Silsbee’s firm, and his influence on Midwest architecture was considered comparable to Wright’s influence. He began apprenticing with the firm of Augustus Bauer and Henry Hill in Chicago when he was 13. He was employed as a draftsman in 1897 by the famed Joseph L. Silsbee.
