Georgia Douglas Johnson was born on September 10, 1880 in Georgia. She was among the handful of women whose work was anthologized in Harlem Renaissance author Alain Locke‘s work Plays of Negro Life: A Source-Book of Native American Drama. After graduating from the Normal School at Atlanta University, she studied music at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory. She published her first poetry collection, The Heart of a Woman, in 1916.
