Guy had an idea for a book about the psychology of complaining a few years after receiving his Ph.D.

At a holiday party, he mentioned it to a literary agent, who pointed an excited finger at him and said, “Write a book proposal!” Two tears later, his book, The Squeaky Wheel: Complaining the Right Way to Get Results, Improve Your Relationships, and Enhance Self-Esteem (Amazon KDP), was published.

Recognizing the need for more science-based popular psychology books, Guy’s literary agent encouraged him to compile all of the research-based techniques and interventions he had been recommending to his patients.

In 2014, he released his second book, Emotional First Aid: Healing Rejection, Guilt, Failure, and Other Everyday Hurts. His first TED Talk, Why We All Need to Practice Emotional First Aid, was inspired by the book.
