Harry Turtledove Career

Turtledove’s first two novels, Wereblood and Werenight, were published in 1979 under the pen name “Eric G. Iverson.”

He used the name “Iverson” until 1985. “Mark Gordian” was another early alias.

Under his real name, he published Herbig-Haro and And So to Bed that year. Turtledove has recently begun publishing historical novels as “H. N. Turteltaub” (Turteltaube means turtle dove in German).

He wrote three books under the pen name “Dan Chernenko” (the Scepter of Mercy series).

Collaborations include The Two Georges with Richard Dreyfuss, “Death in Vesunna” with his first wife, Betty Turtledove (pen name: Elaine O’Byrne), Household Gods with Judith Tarr, and others with Susan Shwartz, S.M. Stirling, and Kevin R. Sandes.

Turtledove won the Homer Award for Short Story for “Designated Hitter” in 1990, the John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction for “The Guns of the South” in 1993, and the Hugo Award for Novella in 1994 for “Down in the Bottomlands.”

Must and Shall was nominated for a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award for Best Novelette in 1996, and it received an honorable mention for an Alternate History Sidewise Award in 1995.

The Two Georges was also given an honorable mention for the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 1995.

In 1996, his Worldwar series received an honorable mention for Alternate History from the Sidewise Awards.

His novel How Few Remain won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in 1998.

In 2003, he received his second Sidewise Award for his novel Ruled Britannia.

For his short story “Zigeuner,” he received his third Sidewise Award.

Turtledove was named honorary Kentucky Colonel and Guest of Honor at Rivercon XXIII in Louisville, Kentucky on August 1, 1998.

His film The Gladiator won the Prometheus Award in 2008.

Turtledove presided over the 58th World Science Fiction Convention, Chicon 2000.

He won the Hugo Award for his novel Down in the Bottomlands.
