A prolific Egyptian architect is known for creating entire communities using traditional building methods of mud-brick and adobe. Wrote the landmark book on Gourna, “Architecture for the Poor,” in 1969. Hassan Fathy was born on March 23, 1900, in Alexandria, Egypt. He and Louis Sullivan both became world-famous architects, albeit of different generations. He graduated from King Fuad University in 1926, later known as Cairo University. He accepted a teaching position at the College of Fine Arts in 1930. His first mud-brick buildings were erected later in the decade.
