Howard Ellsworth Rollins Jr. was a theater, film, and television actor from the United States. Howard Rollins was well recognized for his appearances as Andrew Young in King (1978), George Haley in Roots: The Next Generations (1979), Coalhouse Walker Jr. Rollins was diagnosed with AIDS in the fall of 1996.

Another of his most notable roles was as Virgil Tibbs in 1988’s long-running smash television show In The Heat of the Night, based on the 1967 film of the same name. In 1995, he appeared in his last feature picture, Drunks (1995).

He also starred in Roots: The Next Generations and the TV miniseries King. Rollins made his cinematic debut in the Dino De Laurentiis/Milo Forman picture Ragtime in 1981.

For his role on Another World, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy. Rollins featured in filmmaker Norman Jewison’s film A Soldier’s Story in 1984, which led to his role as Virgil Tibbs on the television series In the Heat of the Night.
