Huel and Monica said their final farewells during the 6 p.m. newscast. During the broadcast, fellow anchors Roop Raj and Amy Lange paid tribute to them in a pair of retrospective segments.

Huel and Monica began working together in 1997 and announced their intention to retire together on February 23, 2022.

During his 25 years at the station, Huel toured the country with Nelson Mandela, followed the Pope, and covered major political conventions.

But, most importantly, Huel had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented reporters, photographers, and producers in broadcasting.

Along the way, he won two Emmys for reporting and was nominated four times for Best Anchor. He became well-known for hosting “Let It Rip!” every Thursday night at 10:30 p.m.
