Because the Soviet authorities regularly prohibited its athletes from competing overseas, Sascha’s parents’ ability to climb in the international rankings was hampered.

With the inevitable fall of the Soviet Union in 1990, Irina and her husband, who functioned as her coach, headed to Germany for a tournament.

While in Germany, the pair received job offers as tennis instructors.

They originally turned down the option to work at the Uhlenhorster Hockey Club in Hamburg, but accepted it the next year and eventually settled in the country.

Mischa reached his greatest singles ranking of No. 25 in the world on July 24, 2017.

At the 2017 Australian Open, Zverev overcame world No. 1 Andy Murray in four sets before falling to eventual champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals.
