Her books focus on the experience of women, contain autobiographical elements, and are often classified as works of magical realism. Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942 in Lima, Peru. She won Chile’s National Prize for Literature more than six decades after Pablo Neruda earned the same honor. After finishing high school, she worked for the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization in both Chile and Belgium. She also found early work translating English books into Spanish.
