Issy’s great-uncle, Donald Anderson, was killed by a Japanese sniper during the Battle of Hong Kong (one of the first conflicts on the Pacific front during World War II) in 1941.
Only after she began playing cricket (in the late 2000s) did her family learn that Donald, a great batting all-rounder, was one of the youngest (he was 17 years old at the time of his debut) Hong Kong cricketers ever.
After Donald died, Issy’s great-grandmother, Phyllis Nolasco da Silva, oversaw a network of British military intelligence operatives in southern China.
After WWII, she received the ‘King’s Medal for Service in the Cause of Freedom,’ the United Kingdom’s highest civilian wartime honour.
