Stapleton began her acting career in 1941 with summer stock shows at the “Greenwood Play House” on Peaks Island, Maine.
Her debut New York appearance was in the “Off-Broadway” production “American Gothic.”
She made her Broadway debut with Jose Quintero’s production of Jane Bowles’ play “In the Summer House” in 1953.
With “Damn Yankees,” she had one of the most successful “Broadway” musicals (1955).
She sang a number of melodious musical tunes. In the 1950s, she was a member of the original cast of the Broadway play Bells Are Ringing.
In the 1960s, she wrote the songs “If a Girl Isn’t Pretty” and “Find Yourself a Man,” and she appeared in “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand.
Aside from her musicals, she appeared in other “Broadway” plays, including Eugene Ionesco’s comic “Rhinoceros” in 1961.
She appeared in a revival of “Arsenic and Old Lace” in 1987.
