Jimmie Walker Career

Walker began working full-time for WRVR, the Riverside Church’s radio station, in 1967.

During the height of his Good Times fame, he eventually released one stand-up comedy album, Dyn-o-mite on Buddah Records (5635).

Walker was 26 years old during the 1974–75 season of Good Times, though his character was much younger.

The actor who played Walker’s father on Good Times, John Amos, was only eight years Walker’s senior.

Walker credits producer/director John Rich with coining the phrase “Dy-no-mite!” which Rich insisted Walker say at the end of each episode.

Walker and executive producer Norman Lear were both skeptical of the idea, but the phrase and Walker’s character became popular with the audience.

Walker did not get along with the series’ lead, Esther Rolle, both off and on-screen, because she and Amos disapproved of Walker’s increasingly buffoonish character and popularity, and Walker was hurt by their disdain.

Amos (before Rolle) left the show due to dissatisfaction, making Walker the star of the show.

Walker was the only member of the gang who did not attend Rolle’s funeral.

He has appeared on Chelsea Lately, Fantasy Island, and The Drew Carrey Show.
