Joe Flanigan was born on January 5, 1967, in Los Angeles as Joseph Dunnigan III.
His mother, Nancy, abandoned him soon after his birth, and his surname was changed to Flanigan after he was adopted by his stepfather, business executive John Flanigan.
Flanigan attended a boarding school in Ojai, California, from the age of 14, where he appeared in the school production of A Streetcar Named Desire.
He went on to acquire a history degree at the University of Colorado, where he also participated in the drama Coriolanus.
He took acting classes to alleviate his shyness on the advice of a buddy, but he had no intention of pursuing a career in acting.
Flanigan spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris as part of the Junior Year Abroad program, where he acquired French.

He now lives in Malibu, California. The Woolsey Fire destroyed the Malibu home he was renting from a local family on November 10, 2018.

Joe Flanigan went into writing after graduating. He was a member of President George H. W. Bush’s advance team on Capitol Hill.

He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse, was trained by Gerald Gordon, and returned to Los Angeles in 1994 to pursue an acting career with the encouragement of several of his friends.
Flanigan appeared in several television shows, including Profiler, First Monday, and Sisters, before landing his breakout role as Lt. Colonel John Sheppard on Stargate Atlantis.
During the week, he lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the series was shot, and flew to Los Angeles on weekends to see his wife and children.
He also wrote for the show and created the stories for the second season episode “Epiphany” and the fourth season episode “Outcast.”
