John Bel Edwards (born September 16, 1966) is an American politician and attorney who has served as Louisiana’s 56th governor since 2016. He formerly served as the Democratic leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives for two terms as a member of the Democratic Party. Edwards was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2011.

In the second round of the 2015 governor’s race, he beat Republican U.S. Senator David Vitter. Edwards was re-elected to a second term in the 2019 election, becoming the state’s first Democratic governor to do so since 1975. He is a veteran of the United States Army, having served with the 82nd Airborne Division and rising to the rank of captain.

Edwards served in the Army for eight years, principally with the 25th Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne Division, where he led a company in the 82nd’s 3rd Brigade, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Because of familial obligations, he stopped his military service and returned to Louisiana.

Edwards received his J.D. from Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1999 and worked as an attorney at the Edwards & Associates Law Firm in Amite.

Edwards handled a range of matters as an attorney, albeit he did not practice criminal law due to his brother’s position as the county sheriff.
