Career as a player

Boston University won the NCAA Division I National Championship in front of Hynes’ home crowd in Providence, Rhode Island in 1995.

Coaching in College

John was an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for the 2000-01 season. 

In the 2002-03 season, he was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin.

Hockey USA

After the 2002-03 season, John spent the next six seasons as the head coach of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. 

As the team’s head coach, he had an overall record of 216-113-19-9.

At the World Under-18 Championships, he led the U.S. Under-18 national team to three medals. 

Similarly, he was the head coach of the United States national team in the 2008 World Junior Championships and an assistant coach for the 2004 U.S. World Junior squad that won a gold medal.

John was named an assistant coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on August 4, 2009.

John was named the new head coach of the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League on June 2, 2015, succeeding Scott Stevens and Adam Oates. 

For the 2015-16 season, he was the NHL’s youngest head coach.

On April 5, 2018, Hynes led the Devils to their first playoff appearance since the 2011-12 season, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs.
