At the age of 17, DeJoria entered the US Navy aboard the USS Hornet and served for two years.

In 1971, he worked for Redken Laboratories as a salesman selling hair care products, where he learned about hair care products.

After a year and a half, he was handed authority for two divisions: scientific schools and chain salons.

He was fired from his job in 1975 owing to a disagreement over business practices.

He subsequently traveled to Fermodyl Hair Care to teach sales to the company’s management and sales team.

Despite a 50% increase in sales, he was fired by the firm because he didn’t fit in.

He joined the Institute of Trichology and started selling the institute’s hair care products.

He received $3,000 per month in addition to a 6% commission on any new business he brought in.

After a year, he was fired since the company could no longer pay his salary.

In 1980, he and his hairstylist friend Paul Mitchell were both experiencing financial troubles, so they decided to launch John Paul Mitchell Systems with a $700 loan.

They decided to design tools for professional stylists that would assist them to reduce the time it takes to style a client’s hair.
