He was born to his father Carl H.T. and his mother Gladys (Hodrov) Sloss. Carl used to work in advertising. According to the 1940 U.S. Census, John was one year old and living with his family in Manhattan on April 4, 1940.

He grew up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in the 1980s.

John attended Moravian College, Boston University, and the Columbia University School of General Studies before dropping out to pursue a career in radio at a small station in Wellsville, New York.

Sterling joined the New York broadcasting network as a talk show host on WMCA in 1971.

Later, he worked as a radio announcer for the WHA’s New York Raiders, the ABA/New NBA’s York/New Jersey Nets (with Mike DeTomasso), the NHL’s New York Islanders (with Bob Lawrence), and the WFL’s New York Stars.

 

In addition, John spent time with the Yankees as a pre-game host on both WMCA and WINS radio. In addition, he co-hosted cable segments with Mel Allen.

Between 1975 and 1980, John called Nets and Islanders games for SportsChannel New York, WOR-TV, WVNJ, and WMCA. He continued to host his WMCA talk show until 1978.

Following his time in New York, John spent nine years in Atlanta hosting a sports call-in show on WSB radio. He also covered the Braves for Turner Sports from 1982 to 1987 and the Hawks from 1981 to 1989.

He has some quirks that distinguish his calls as unique, unusual, and divisive. Aside from his vibrant vocal personality, John has distinguished himself from other announcers by characterizing plays differently than they appear.

On September 1, 2021, after calling a Yankees game remotely from Yankee Stadium, John was stranded in his car about a mile from his home in Edgewater due to flooding caused by Hurricane Ida.

He was rescued, however, by Rickie Ricardo, a Spanish-language Yankees broadcaster who also lives in Edgewater. On that fateful day, Rickie was driving his Jeep Cherokee.

John returned to New York in 1989 to broadcast Yankees games on WABC radio, and he has been with the team ever since. He currently calls games for the New York Yankees Radio Network on WFAN and its affiliates.

Suzyn Waldman has been John’s partner since 2005. Jay Johnstone from 1989 to 1990, Joe Angel in 1991, Michael Kay from 1992 to 2001, and Charley Steiner from 2002 to 2004 were previous announcing partners.

In 2013, the Yankees announced a ten-year deal with WFAN, and John was retained. He is currently under contract through the 2021 season.
