Democratic Party politician who served from 1965 until 1971 as a United States Representative from California’s thirty-eighth district. Subsequently, he held a six-year term as a United States Senator. While in the Senate, he penned a piece of anti-trust legislation known as the Tunney Act. John Tunney was born on June 26, 1934 in New York. He and fellow Democratic politician Ted Kennedy were roommates at the University of Virginia. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Yale University, he entered the University of Virginia School of Law. He subsequently joined a New York City-based legal practice.
