Several of his literary works, including The Bright Shawl, Cytherea, and Wild Oranges, were adapted into films. Joseph Hergesheimer was born on February 15, 1880, in Pennsylvania. In Babbitt, Sinclair Lewis references Hergesheimer’s novel Three Black Pennies. He briefly studied art but quickly decided to pursue writing instead.
